# Setting the Storage Directory

> Give the gateway a directory for its scan scripts – and set the permission the gateway itself does not check.

For the gateway to update its scan scripts, it needs a directory on the machine
it runs on. You set it in the gateway's window in the *Settings* tab, in the field
*Storage Directory:*. The field may stay empty.

## Existence check

If the field is filled, the directory must exist – otherwise "Error while saving,
storage directory does not exist" appears directly below it. The check runs on
every change to the field, not only when saving.

<Warning>
  The check covers **only existence, not access**. A directory the service account
  has no rights on is saved without objection – the scan scripts can then not be
  updated, and the gateway gives no indication of it.

  The service account needs **full access** to this directory. Which account that is
  is shown under *Log on as* in the *General* tab, see
  [Installing and Registering the Gateway](/docs/en/scan/gateway-install#registration-status-and-service).
</Warning>

## Saving

*Save* takes the same route as in the *Registration* tab: the gateway sends the
configuration, waits until the service has applied it, and restarts the service.

<Note>
  The IP ranges from the *Registration* tab are checked as well. If one of them is
  invalid, saving fails here too – the message "Error while saving, incorrect IP
  addresses exist" then appears as a notification in the top right corner, although
  you are editing a directory.
</Note>

Once the directory is set, you continue working with the gateway in the browser,

support, see [Reviewing and Exporting Logs](/docs/en/scan/gateway-logs).
