Document in the tab bar of the Docs area opens the Create Document dialog. It also decides whether the document gets an approval process.

Required fields

Create stays disabled while a required field is missing.

Turning on Controlled Document

The Controlled Document switch carries the description “Manage approvals and reviews”. Turn it on, and Type becomes required; the document also gets an approval process, a history and a review cycle, see Documentation Fundamentals. Create the document from the Controlled Documents list, and the switch is already on — in every other list it starts off. You can turn it off either way.
Controlled documents are included from Business on. In the Pro edition, a hint with the Change Edition button takes the place of the switch, and the dialog creates only uncontrolled documents.
This decision cannot be reversed after creation. Neither the Properties tab nor anywhere else offers a way to turn document control on or off afterwards.

Choosing a type

With Controlled Document on, you choose a Type: Policy, Process, Work Instruction, Plan, Manual, Form or Other.
The value Plan only classifies the document. The network plans (Topology, IP Networks, IP Segments) are managed separately under Understanding Maps.

Language & Format

Three defaults for the document to come:
These settings apply to the document, not to your account — your personal settings under Appearance & Language stay untouched.

Export Settings

The Export Settings sit in the dialog’s second column, which starts collapsed:
If Cover Title is left blank, the document’s title takes its place.
Export settings can be reopened and changed later through the gear icon in the Content tab — unlike document control, they are not a one-time decision. For an archived document they are read-only there until the document is restored.

On create

Create creates the document and then, in a second step, a first chapter Introduction. If only that second step fails, the document still opens, with a hint to create the first chapter manually in the table of contents. If creating the document itself fails, the dialog stays open and shows the error.

On cancel

Cancel and closing the dialog reset every field, including the export settings. A second attempt starts from the defaults. Writing and exporting chapters: Adding Content. Submitting a controlled document for approval: Document Control.
