Docusnap Version 6.3 Out Now!

The wait is over! The new Docusnap Version 6.3 has just been released. This version again boasts a number of innovative features, enabling you to document your IT environment even more comprehensively and accurately.

A new feature is the inventory and documentation of Veeam. This means that you can now integrate – besides Symantec Backup Exec – another data backup solution into your IT documentation.

In addition, numerous optimisations and enhancements for current software products have found their way into the new version, e.g. the option to also inventory and document cluster solutions for Microsoft Hyper-V environments. New features for the documentation of software licenses have been added to the License Management module. For example, the Dashboard gives you a quick overview of the licenses that have not yet been registered in License Management or reveals the software with the greatest number of different versions found.

We will shortly publish separate, comprehensive articles on the innovations and optimisations in our Docusnap blog.

After 2013, Docusnap was featured again this year’s IP EXPO Europe in London. The exhibition, which was held on the 8th and 9th of October 2014 at the ExCeL exhibition centre in London, turned out to be a striking success for itelio GmbH, the manufacturer of the Docusnap software solution. This year again, we had many exciting and intensive talks, focusing mainly on the presentation of Docusnap version 6.2. New Docusnap Version 6.2 Out Now!

The wait is over! From now on, the new version 6.2 of the Docusnap software solution is available. Docusnap 6.2 includes the following new features and modules: :

1.) IT Correlations (smart relations)
2.) Inventory and documentation of Symantec Backup Exec installations
3.) Inventory and documentation of ORACLE databases
4.) Documentation of network switch VLAN configurations
5.) New user interface
6.) Numerous detail improvements

Once you have installed Docusnap 6.2, you will immediately notice the new user interface. The new version has adopted the look and feel of Office 2013. The user interface was streamlined to include only the essential features, but the basic functionality of the Docusnap software has not changed. With Docusnap, the first step still consists in inventorying the IT environment, followed by the creation of IT relations. Smart relations enable you to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the network, e.g. dependencies and interrelations between services and user accounts can be defined. Information which is normally hard to obtain or whose retrieval would require considerable effort, is now easily accessible, thanks to the IT Correlations feature.

Moreover, with version 6.2, you can inventory two additional products: besides the configuration of Symantec Backup Exec data backups, you also can scan Oracle databases. For Windows servers, it is now possible to document the DFS roots settings. For the creation of overviews and plans, a native Visio file format can be used now.

What is more, Docusnap 6.2 now also allows you to document the VLAN configurations of your network switches. Version 6.2 boasts many detail improvements. Structural improvements and simplifications make the software even more user-friendly.

Customers with a valid maintenance agreement are entitled to a free license key for version 6.2. They can thus upgrade their existing installation to the new version 6.2 free of charge.

Docusnap’s industry-leading software enables the automated generation of IT environment inventories, sophisticated analysis of file and application permissions, development of disaster recovery documentation, and management of software assets and licences. With just a few clicks and in just a few minutes, Docusnap delivers the precise, up-to-date information required to make well-founded IT and business decisions and help organizations ensure their compliance with industry regulation and international legislation.
Networks and IT environments are becoming increasingly complex, and ensuring compliance is both a growing challenge and an absolute necessity. It is vital that organizations have comprehensive and current information about the state of their network environment,” said Peter Kurz, co-founder and Managing Director of Docusnap.
Docusnap, which primarily targets mid-market organizations across a broad range of industry sectors – including financial services, education, the public sector, manufacturing, and logistics – arrived in the UK in August 2013 having developed a strong reputation and network of resellers across continental Europe. It is now looking to bolster this network with UK-based channel partners as it expands its business into the UK.
And Docusnap Ltd. will be back at IP EXPO 2014.

Docusnap Ltd.

End-to-end analysis of complex IT networks at the click of a button – Docusnap provides sustainable solutions that enable organizations in the mid-market to realise substantial cost savings by reducing the time and resources they have to spend on compiling IT documentation.
The software provides organizations with comprehensive up-to-date IT documentation for their Windows, Linux, and Mac environments, greatly reducing the complex processes and time required to acquire this information, and quickly and simply generating inventories and visual documentation of the relationships between hardware, software, processes and systems.
Docusnap also helps organizations to document and analyse permissions in Windows file systems, Exchange environments and SharePoint installations, ensuring that only employees with the appropriate level of seniority or security clearance have access to and control of particular files or applications. This is especially important for organizations that handle sensitive customer data. Licence management is also covered by the Docusnap software. Docusnap compares installed software with the licence agreements in place, in order to detect over- or under-licensing and manage software updates, permission analysis, visualization of IT concepts (ITIL CMDB based) and relations, managing IT assets and licence renewals.

Swisscom clocks up time savings with IT documentation from Docusnap

IT documentation software from Docusnap has enabled Swisscom IT Services AG (ITS), one of the leading Swiss IT service providers to save time and money while improving organisational efficiency and transparency.
Swisscom IT Services AG provides IT outsourcing, SAP, and workplace and finance services. With a staff of around 3,000 and a customer base of approximately 400, the company looks after a range of organisations from large enterprises to SMEs. Specialising in managing the on-premise infrastructures of its customers, Swisscom needed a solution to document the IT environments of companies to ensure it was providing accurate and timely consulting services.
Prior to the introduction of Docusnap, even the simplest tasks proved difficult: “We always had the problem that the engineers had no time for proper IT documentation and the documentation really reflected it; it had no consistent quality and, above all, it was barely understandable. It was difficult to pass on the information to colleagues, or to collect it transparently at a central location,” said Rüdiger Ruttkowski, ICT architect at Swisscom.
“Since we implemented Docusnap, we’ve not experienced any of the problems of the past. Now, every member of staff can install the software locally on their PC, filter the desired values for each customer, and store them in a central database,” he continued.
The software was implemented smoothly and Ruttkowski’s team could start working right away, soon realising that the time savings were significant: “The team now has absolute control of the customer network documentation and can turn their attention to their actual tasks. The first use of Docusnap was for one of our major customers, and in a very short time the software had supplied us with the necessary comprehensive information – something that in the past had been a tedious procedure involving time-consuming phone calls and email correspondence.”
They were also impressed with the user-friendliness and transparency of the software. Swisscom consultants use Docusnap to create a documentation system and perform an analysis, an integral part of every project. During this process, consultants are able to point out inaccuracies in licensing and configurations to their customers, and can also address topics beyond the permission in context.
Swisscom also uses Docusnap for the creation of IT concepts. In Ruttkowski’s eyes, this option is an extremely positive aspect of the Docusnap offering: “The software comes with many good reports, which can be used for further analysis, providing another way for us to save time. The reports can also be customised very easily to the CI of each customer.”
“Swisscom is a great example of where a successful implementation of IT documentation can allow organisations to save a huge amount of time, allowing their in-house teams to focus on other areas of the business. As networks and IT environments become more complex and increasing amounts of regulation further muddy the water, it is crucial that organisations have a comprehensive overview of their entire IT network environments,” said Peter Kurz, co-founder and Managing Director of Docusnap.
Ultimately, it is the re-distribution of time that has had the most positive impact, giving Swisscom a competitive edge. The incorporation of the Docusnap software allows them to gather and manage all information from the networks at a central location, which gives the team a speed advantage over competitors who are still creating the IT documentation by hand. This is will prove crucial to the company’s future success: “Customers are no longer willing to pay high amounts for information that can be obtained quickly and thus at low cost. This is the reason why we opted for Docusnap and we will push the use of this software internally even more,” Ruttkowski concluded.

Docusnap showcases IT documentation Software at IP EXPO

Visit stand B12 @ IP EXPO to learn about the convenience and time-saving benefits of automated IT documentation, permission analysis, and licence management.

IT documentation specialist Docusnap will be at IP EXPO at London’s Earls Court 2, 16-17 October, (stand B12) to showcase its automated IT documentation software following the company’s move into the UK market earlier this year.

Docusnap’s industry-leading software enables the automated generation of IT environment inventories, sophisticated analysis of file and application permissions, development of disaster recovery documentation, and management of software assets and licences. With just a few clicks and in just a few minutes, Docusnap delivers the precise, up-to-date information required to make well-founded IT and business decisions and help organisations ensure their compliance with industry regulation and international legislation.

“Networks and IT environments are becoming increasingly complex, and ensuring compliance is both a growing challenge and an absolute necessity. It is vital that organisations have comprehensive and current information about the state of their network environment,” said Peter Kurz, co-founder and Managing Director of Docusnap.

“Recent news stories have fuelled concerns over data security and privacy, and CIOs are understandably keen to strengthen the safeguards they have in place to protect sensitive information. But the vast majority of data breaches still result from internal actions. It is, therefore, crucial to have a clear picture of exactly who has access to what within your corporate IT environment,” he continued.

Docusnap has recently worked with Swisscom IT Services, one of the leading outsourced IT service providers in Switzerland, to provide audit-proof documentation of its customers’ networks and greatly reduce the time and effort invested in generating IT documentation:

“We always had the problem that engineers had no time for proper IT documentation, and the documentation really reflected it: it had no consistent quality and, above all, it was hard to understand. So it was difficult to pass the information on to colleagues, or to collect it transparently at a central location,” said Ruediger Ruttkowski, ICT Architect at Swisscom IT Services.

In a very short time, the software supplied comprehensive information about systems – something that in the past had been a tedious procedure involving time-consuming phone calls and email correspondence. Ruttkowski was impressed by the user-friendliness and transparency of the Docusnap software: “You do not need to be too technical about it and, nevertheless, Docusnap really supplier a wealth of information. The time savings achieved with Docusnap are really enormous,” he concluded.

Docusnap, which primarily targets mid-market organisations across a broad range of industry sectors – including financial services, education, the public sector, manufacturing, and logistics – arrived in the UK in August 2013 having developed a strong reputation and network of resellers across continental Europe. It is now looking to bolster this network with UK-based channel partners as it expands its business into the UK.

Docusnap sparks huge interest at the CeBIT

Visitors came in great numbers to see the presentation of the new Docusnap version 6.1 at the CeBIT trade show. From March 5 – 9, itelio GmbH introduced its improved software for IT documentation in Hanover. Apart from its well-known features, this version opens new possibilities for automated and comprehensive documentation of complex IT networks.
There was an enormous response during the five trade show days: Thousands of visitors came to the itelio booth and the consultants conducted almost 500 one-to-one interviews. They informed interested visitors especially about the new features of the Docusnap software solution. The DocusnapConnect and DocusnapLink interfaces allow easy integration into third-party applications such as support ticket systems. What is more, Docusnap 6.1 lets you create, import, and manage any desired asset types. Besides VMware and Hyper-V environments, the new version inventories Citrix XenServer and enables you to perform permission analyses in Microsoft Exchange environments. Finally, the user interface of the IT Concepts module has been improved.
“The new features got very positive feedback from the visitors”, says Peter Kurz, itelio Managing Director. “Some people already knew the previous Docusnap version 6.0. They were enthusiastic about the new milestone in development. With version 6.1, we implemented many additional functions our customers wished to see in Docusnap.” Moreover, the software convinced numerous visitors who are still doing without any solution for professional IT documentation. “The great benefit of our product becomes evident immediately. The diverse applications and the individual pricing scheme are attractive for companies of any possible size”, Peter Kurz continues.
In the meantime, more than 2500 customers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are relying on Docusnap—and their number is growing every day. These companies have recognized how important it is to have professional documentation of their IT infrastructure for their economic success. Apart from inventorying networks, Docusnap is suitable for many purposes, such as visualization, license management, or permission analysis.

Central Docusnap Training in 2013

Good news for all existing and new Docusnap users:

Driven by the steadily high demand, the Docusnap publisher, itelio GmbH, will continue to offer Docusnap trainings at central locations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (more countries on request).

A Docusnap training is beneficial for both the attending users and their company:
The users no longer shy away from using Docusnap, as they learn through hands-on examples how to use each feature and what general options Docusnap has in store for them.
After attending a Docusnap training, your employees will be able to use Docusnap systematically, thus saving even more time than before. This way, a company’s investment in Docusnap pays off in even shorter time.

A complete training module comprises three days: Basic knowledge of IT documentation, Docusnap for beginners, and Docusnap for pros.
As usual, the Docusnap Pro Training course builds on the contents of the beginners’ training and deepens the knowledge the users acquired of the basic Docusnap features.
The IT Documentation training day provides general insight into the scope, content, and structure of a meaningful IT documentation, independently of Docusnap.

For the attendants, the trainings provide a wealth of know-how about the broad application range of each Docusnap feature.
Experience shows that after training, Docusnap is used much more efficiently in the company.

Individual trainings can be agreed at any time, independently of the central trainings. Our Docusnap Sales team will be pleased to advise you on the contents, duration, and form of an individual training.

More details on the contents and dates of the centrally held Docusnap trainings in 2013 coming soon!
